Yes the racial and sexist slurs are insulting but for me, we should not dignify this with our time and attention. I'm not saying that we should just look the other way. The fact of the matter is that we all are guilty of racial and sexist slurs. Sometimes we joke about foreigners as well. Just because we don't talk about it out in the open, does it make us less guilty?

We have to admit that all of us regardless of race hold many racial and cultural biases. We should look at ourselves and see if there is something in us that we can change to make things better for the world in general and for our children most especially. It is very difficult and almost pointless to try change how other people view us as Filipinos by ranting about it in the media. They have their biases and so do we. What we need is to act more honorably towards others. We also need to take pride in ourselves that no matter what other people say, we have the unshakeable belief in who we are. That no insult they throw our way can hurt us because we know ourselves.

We really cannot change how people from other countries view us by signing a petition or sending letters to BBC and forcing them to make a public apology. What we can do is to change how others see us, one person at a time. In dealing with people from other countries we must show forth the best in us--our warmth, our joy, our resilience, our indomitable spirit, our heroism, and our fervent trust in God. Eventually, 'they' won't have arsenal to hurt us with.
